Dr. Redfern Barrett is a non-binary author whose stories have featured in Passages North, The Sun Magazine, The Colored Lens, and Nature. Their nonfiction has featured in Guernica, Strange Horizons, PinkNews, and at the National Museum of Denmark.

Redfern was a finalist for the Bi Book Awards, 1st runner up for the Leapfrog Prize, and shortlisted for the Bristol Short Story Prize and HISSAC Prize. They were also a semifinalist for the UNO Publishing Lab Prize, The Big Moose Prize, and The Journal Non/Fiction Prize, along with making the 12-person longlist for the Royal Academy/Pin Drop Award, as well as several others.

Born in Sheffield, England, Redfern later moved to Wales and gained a PhD in Literature from Swansea University. They coined the term ‘Ambitopia’, a breakdown of the utopia/dystopia binary that has inspired a variety of works including exhibitions, essays, and academic studies. Redfern has campaigned for queer rights since they were a teenager and has written boutique LGBTQ+ novels under their full name, ‘Redfern Jon Barrett’.

Redfern now lives in Berlin and is represented by Jonathan Villegas of Olswanger Literary.
